Today’s Students Learning for Tomorrow’s World

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

It’s okay to fail, but it’s not okay to give up

Parent School Surveys

Each year, the Department of Education, Training and the Arts (DETA) conducts a survey of parents and students in order to gauge their satisfaction of important aspects of schooling. Later in the year, the school will receive a report outlining the results of the survey for our school. The results will help the school to evaluate and to reflect on how well the school is going, and to identify areas for future development. The survey results are also an important part of the school's annual report. The responses are completely confidential. I urge those parents, who were randomly selected to complete the survey, to return their survey forms, which were distributed last Thursday and Friday, back to the School by THURSDAY 21 ST AUGUST.

All of the Year 7 students and 60 randomly selected Year 5 students will also complete the survey over the coming days.

PREP ENROLMENTS FOR 2009

We are now taking Prep enrolments for 2009. If you have a child born between the 1st July 2003 and 30th June 2004 they will be eligible for Prep in 2009... All enrolments for Prep are welcome and are being taken now.

QUEENSLAND COMPARABLE ASSESSMENT TASKS (QCAT)

Our Year 4 students will be participating in a Queensland Comparable Assessment Task. QCATs are authentic, performance-based assessments that:

· solve meaningful problems

· emphasize critical thinking and reasoning

· provide evidence on what students know and can do in relation to a selection of Essential Learnings.

All students in the Greater Brisbane region will be participating in this common assessment task in the key learning area of Science. The task will take place over several weeks either side of the September holidays. All work will be facilitated by the class teacher in class time.

Individual Photos

Please return money or photos ASAP in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and class. Cost is $12. Payments may be made by cheque or cash.

From Mrs Day

Prep, Year One, Two and Three children and their families had a wonderful Junior Athletics Carnival last Friday. The children got into the spirit of having sporting fun while learning the important skills of turn taking, giving your personal best and encouraging others of all abilities. There were many helpers on the day – adults and children, all who gave their time and enthusiasm generously. One of the army of helpers was Nicole MacCorquodale who did a great job of organising the very enjoyable Sausage Sizzle. Thank you to Nicole and her helpers and all the others who contributed to the day.

FREE DRESS DAY- World Vision 40 Hr Famine

On Friday the Year 7 World Vision Service Committee, will be holding a Famine Day for Years 5-7, where we will be going without furniture for 8 hours. We have organised activities all day during school for the fives, sixes, sevens and the lower school isn’t left out either, because there will be a free dress day for the WHOLE school with money raised going to World Vision. This year W.V is raising money for child slave labourers in India . The theme for the free dress day is orange, black and white, which are the World Vision colours, so if everyone could wear these colours and bring a gold coin that would be great. There will be a prize for the best dressed in each grade. If there is anyone who hasn’t signed up for this famine yet (in years 5,6 and 7), we will be running sign on stalls during lunchtimes at the top covered area during lunchtimes this week.

FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Hi, my name is Hannah and just a few weeks ago I commenced a chaplaincy role here at Chapel Hill State School . My role in the school is still being established. There are a number of involvement opportunities, so stay tuned as we establish these. Mostly though, I am here to support the school community and to be an extra set of ears and pair of hands. I will be sharing my time with Kenmore State School . You can find me at CHSS on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday mornings. I have previously worked for Brisbane City Council’s Youth Team on a Community Arts Project on Brisbane ’s north side. I have lived in the Chapel Hill area for the past 4.5 years and my face may be familiar from the Kenmore Coffee Club where I worked for over three years. I have enjoyed meeting many of you already. Be sure to say hello if you see me around. I look forward to meeting you!
