MUSIC PROGRAM
In Music News - See and Hear a small section of our choir as they performed at the Brisbane City Mall.
The Instrumental Music Students were on show at Indooroopilly Shoppingtown
The school has a very strong
and well-supported Music program, which is facilitated by the school's
Music specialist, Mrs Bridget Cook.
Music lessons take
place from the school's own Music Room located in the school grounds or in the Arts Building.
All students from Year 1 - 7
receive specialist classroom music lessons. Lessons are scheduled for one
half hour per week with complementary activities presented by the general
classroom teacher.
The Queensland Music Program
has a traditional Kodaly base. Children first learn to sing and play
music, and to organise musical sounds. They then go on to learn how to
read and interpret musical symbols.
In Year 5, students are
introduced to the recorder. The recorder is used as a preparatory
instrument for the Instrumental Music Program. Children learn to play
songs from the musical games they play in class, as well as arrange
performances with other classroom instruments.
Music is a performance art.
The children prepare solo, small group and class performances for their
peers or for other classes in the school. These take place at the whole
school assembly or in the music room. Some groups are keen to go out into
the local community to sing and play for a wider audience.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
All children
are now heavily involved in Instrumental Music Classes at School.
Students
are selected for the following programs - Strings and Bands - at the end
of Year 5 for Band and Year 3 for Strings.
The Students
have their tuition of Instrumental Music from its own newly acquired building
at the rear of the hall.
Instrumental Music
Program
Here at Chapel Hill State School we are able to offer students the
opportunity to explore and develop their musical abilities through playing
an instrument and participating in ensembles. It is through music children
develop a sense of artistry, expression and aesthetic sensitivity. To
discover the value of music as a mode of expression while at school is
preparation for a lifetime leisure activity or vocation.
Our school has 2 visiting instrumental teachers who also help to establish
links and 'flow on' to the Kenmore State High School music program and
other Secondary High School Instrumental Music Programs. Mr Kennedy
(brass, woodwind, percussion), Miss Chen (strings) and our class music
teacher, Mrs Cook, are all well respected and very much liked by both
students and parents.
Chapel Hill State School offers a number of ensembles designed to cater to the variety
and range of students' musical needs. It is compulsory for all students
receiving lessons at school on a musical instrument to participate in an
ensemble upon attaining the required standard, and when a vacancy exists.

Bands
Bands rehearsals
are at 7.45 on Tuesday for the Intermediate band and on
Wednesday for the Senior Band. These students are from Year 6 and Year
7, generally.

2000.
The 4 Bands are conducted by Mr E Kennedy- Junior, Intermediate, Senior and Jazz Band.
Junior Concert Band
This consists of
brass, woodwind and percussion instruments and caters to students in their
first year of instruction (Year 5 & 6 students). This ensemble is intended
to provide an introduction to concert band performance with repertoire
consisting of the recommended tutorial text, as well as selected concert
band performance material. Rehearsals for this band commence in Term 2.
Senior Concert Band
This consists of brass,
woodwind (Year 6 & 7 students) and percussion students, and caters to the
more advanced instrumentalists. Accordingly the repertoire and performance
standard is high. The Senior Concert Band is open to all students deemed
to have reached a suitable standard. Positions are offered based on an
individual student's results from the yearly schedule of examinations and
assessments. Participation in concerts and competitions is compulsory.
Stage Band
The Stage Band
will rehearse at lunch times on Wednesday. This group is mainly made up
of Year 6 and Year 7 students and is conducted by Mr E. Kennedy.
CHOIR
The Choir performs frequently at a number of venues in the district - from the School Assembly, School Fete, Retirement Viillages and Shopping Centre perfomances as well as a variety of eisteddfods.
The Choirs are coordinated by the school's Classroom Music Teacher,
Mrs B Cook
Chapel Hill State School won the Choral Fanfare
in 1999 and in the 2001
Competition.

Here the Junior Choir can be seen performing at Iona
Retirement Village.
Chapel Hill State School has
currently two choirs; Junior Choir for students in Years 4 & 5; Senior
Choir for students in Years 6 & 7. Choir is open to all students in the
school, irrespective of ability. This year over 100 children participate
in choral activities.
The Junior Choir is conducted by Mrs Cook and the Senior Choir is conducted by Miss Lea Withnall (Lea was the school's first Music Captain in 1999 who has generously returned to Chapel Hill School to conduct this choir for the school). Both Choirs use the services of Mrs Withnall to accompany them on piano.
The choirs rehearse once per
week for 45 minutes. During rehearsals the children are involved in
warm-up activities and singing exercises, as well as learning repertoire
for performance. Singing is a physical activity with emphasis on moving
and being active.
The choirs participate in
various performances on School Assemblies, Shopping Centre promotions and
retirement villages. The groups also perform at local eisteddfods where
we interact with other schools in the area. We take every opportunity to promote our choir to perform in a variety of locations.
A small section of the Choir perfoming at the Brisbane City Mall. They have also sung in the Brisbane City Hall. What an experience that was!!!!
Strings Band
The Senior
String Ensemble will rehearse on Friday mornings at 7.45.
The Junior
String Ensemble rehearses on Friday lunch times from 11.00.
Children
involved in this ensemble began their music lessons from Year 3.
The Strings
program is conducted by Ms D Chen.
All string instruments make up
this ensemble and our two groups cater for students learning violin,
viola, cello and double bass. Repertoire will be drawn from the standard
string orchestra literature and arrangements of popular music, as well as
the recommended text. The Junior String Ensemble allows students to
experience ensemble performance. The Senior String Ensemble develops
performance skills such as tuning and advanced musicality.

Students in the Instrumental Music Program receive one thirty
minute lesson per week in the School's Instrumental Music Room.

Instruction in Instrumental Music takes the form of small
group sessions by one of our Instrumental teachers.
Examinations and
Assessment
All students participating in the
Instrumental Music Program undergo formal assessment at the end of
Semester One and Two. Examinations are compulsory for all instrumental
students. The results of testing are sent home on a separate report card
which accompanies the school report card at the end of each semester.
The aim of adopting this
system of examination and assessment is to standardise performance
criteria and expectations for all students, and allows instructors to
identify and target the student's individual strengths and weaknesses. It
would be expected that students would attain a level of performance
according to predetermined criteria for acceptance into all school
ensembles and senior groups.
Instrumental Levy
At the beginning of each school
semester all students are required to pay an Instrumental Music Levy. This
levy is to assist in the administration costs of the program. Those
students borrowing a school instrument are required to pay an extra levy,
which assists in the maintenance of these instrument.
Concerts and Public
Performances
Each ensemble performs several times throughout the year at concerts,
community functions and eisteddfods. Performing under competitive
conditions is valuable for developing advanced musicianship and
disciplined ensemble conduct. Students are encouraged to feel a sense of
pride in their personal performances and in the musical growth of the
ensemble as a whole rather than a sense of competitiveness in their
playing.
The schedule of public
performances and eisteddfods varies from year to year and is affected by
current events and priorities. All public performances are advised well in
advance. Due to the teamwork nature of these groups
attendance at all
public performances is mandatory,
unless reasonable
circumstances deem otherwise. For all public performances students are
required to wear full band uniform.
Music Camps
Each year instrumental students
are given the opportunity to attend a music camp relevant to their current
level of skill development. Students develop through socialising with
other musicians and educational interaction with instructors from other
schools. They experience full ensemble rehearsals, as well as group
workshops.
