School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

The School has decided to change its rules to be just 3 in number.

The school Rules: RESPECT for SELF, RESPECT for OTHERS and RESPECT for the ENVIRONMENT were introduced to students on parade this week.

Routines are the way that each rule will become observable i.e.

  • Respect for Self – wear a hat with a full brim, eat a good lunch
  • Respect for Others – listen when others are speaking, appropriate language
  • Respect for Environment – sticks and stones stay on the ground

The aim is to word both the rules and routines positively to reinforce the desired behaviour.

RESPECT SELF

RESPECT OTHERS

RESPECT ENVIRONMENT

A team at Chapel Hill began the first stage of formal training in SWPBS last week. The team consisted of 11 people from across the school community and included staff, support staff, parents and community agency representatives. We trained for two days and have begun the process of data collection to identify the priority areas to address over the next year.

SWPBS is a data driven, broad range of systematic and individualized strategies essentially involving school teams developing three critical practices:

  • A three-tiered approach to prevention of problem behaviour which (1)focuses on preventing the development of new cases of problem behaviours, (2) reducing the number of existing cases, and (3) reducing the intensity and complexity of extremely challenging cases
  • An emphasis on instruction and acknowledgement of desired behaviour whereby specific behavioural expectations and skills are explicitly taught to all students, and acknowledged when displayed.
  • A function-based approach to better understand and manage the variables (times, places, relationships, skill deficits) leading to problem behaviour
